Forget last season’s neoprene and mermaid prints: for Fall Winter 2012 Versace went for something a little more somber.
Visibly inspired by the recent blockbuster ‘Millennium’ by David Fincher and its leading, emo-friendly actress Rooney Mara, the show kicked off with all-black, Goth numbers, and short bangs for every model: leather bodycon dresses with hip enhancement (a punk continuation of the house’s couture collection), bustier tops with encrusted crucifix, leather boots recreating a fishnet impression.
Bling signifiers —a couple of lush fur jackets, plenty of Swarovski – made discreet appearances.
From out of darkness to outer space, the show took an unexpected futuristic twist: yellow, and orange dresses —think body conscious babydolls—, black shift coats with silver piecings seemed to nudge at Pierre Cardin heydays.
True to its house style, the collection ended with a couple of sexy cocktail dresses, some with cut-outs at the waist and stomach, held together by string, others elongated, silver, mermaid-like.
Whether dreaming of biker gangs or Dracula, Donatella has, as always, managed to merge humor, bling, and vavavoom.
