After taking us around the world in his last few shows, Jean Paul Gaultier brought us back home to Paris during his Fall Winter 2010/2011 Haute Couture collection.  Now that Gaultier is out at Hermès he seems to be bringing some of that refined style to his own line but with the sexiness and attitude he is known for.  Exaggerated shoulders, batwing sleeves, and belts cinching together otherwise slouchy styles was an amusing way to play with different silhouettes and really made some of the looks pop.  The look was perfectly accessorized with huge costume jewelry, fox fur shawls, and lacy tights with the Eiffel Tower on the back.  A mini performance in middle of the show by burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese was truly a match made in fashion heaven and a fun surprise for everyone in attendance.  The collection, the performance, the audience – everything screamed old school Parisian glamour…more please!

Riccardo Tisci is quickly becoming a favorite among the fashion crowd with his stunning collections for Givenchy.  Even though the French Fashion House cut back this year, holding a small presentation instead of a runway show with only ten looks as opposed to the normal twenty plus, Tisci did not and has definitely topped his previous collections with these ten stunning creations.  The simple color palette consisted only of white, gold, and brown – all the better to focus on the delicate Chantilly lace, ostrich feathers, and extravagant embellishments.  While everyone is talking about the struggles of Haute Couture it is clear that money is the only problem because the creativity and craftsmanship is still going strong.

American designer Thom Browne made his Paris Fashion Week debut with a memorable Spring Summer 2011 show.

Browne’s distinct style is based on his love for unusual proportions – this season the entire collection was a uniform shrunken blazer over a button down shirt paired with slim cut shorts hitting just above the knee.

To keep it interesting he played with different fabric, prints, and colors and the range was incredible.

For the office there were classic gray suits or bold pinstripes.

For men who are more daring Mr. Browne offered summer tweeds covered in bows, brightly colored stripes on raw silk, or even a blazer bedazzled in sequins.

For preppier cliental other options include seersucker, linen, cotton with embroidered fish, or even a red white and blue getup perfect for a 4th of July weekend in Nantucket.

The list goes on and on with a total of 40 different looks (check out all the pics!!).

While the unconventional proportions may not be for everybody those who are willing to try something new should be pleased with the dapper stylings of Thom Browne.

Dunhill designer Kim Jones gave men everywhere a lesson in sartorial elegance with his Spring Summer 2011 collection.

Jones stayed true to the Dunhill legacy by creating a classic British style while still keeping it relevant and in the now.

The summery color palette of ashy grays and tan paired with light purple and sky blue is fit for an afternoon in the English countryside.

Every piece was perfectly tailored from the most formal silk suits to weekend wear consisting of shorts and a cardigan sweater or blazer.

Each expertly styled look was brought together by the subtle accessories, no detail was overlooked.

Pocket squares accented the suits with a slight color contrast, small silver belt buckles peeked through open sweaters, and bright red shoe laces made otherwise subdued gray suede shoes pop.

With so many trends that come and go it is refreshing to see a designer creating clothing that will continue to look good season after season.

British designer, Paul Smith presented his Men’s Spring Summer 2011 collection in Paris this week.

Somewhat disheveled models took to the runway with untucked shirts, bed head, and sunglasses looking like they partied the night away at “Le Baron”.

The look was glamorous casual with a 1970’s twist.

Silk blazers were paired with t-shirts, pants were slim fitting and cropped, and there were even a few tie dyed pieces thrown into the mix.

There was a feminine touch to the collection as well, with some silk floral patterns and oversized bows found on shirts on shirts.

This young and modern collection is sure to be seen at fashionable parties and trendy clubs from Paris to L.A.

The French fashion house’s classic style was modernized with legging-like pants and shorts, knit shirts, and shoes that appear to be half sandal/half sneaker.

Chic silk blazers with unfinished seams and structured vests dressed the look up and gave it an elegance that will certainly be appreciated by the Lanvin Man.

While the clothing was certainly praiseworthy, show goers could not stop talking about the accessories, especially the stunning tribal-like jewelry complete with layers of chains, leather, and horns.

The avant-garde collection truly showed off his range as he took many of this season’s trends and made them his own. As many designers did this season, he too played with proportions and fit but instead of an ode to the past, Simons looked to the future. The look was modern and androgynous with billowy wide-leg trousers and skorts paired with tailored vests and blazers. Plastic looking tops (some almost apron-like) were worn over shirts and ties and decorated zippers replaced buttons. The clean color palette was broken up with bright pinks and orange. The collection ended with 4 expertly tailored suits that artfully showed off Simon’s expertise and craftsmanship.

There was no elaborate set or strobe lights, just a simple white runway painted onto the floor allowing the audience to focus solely on the clothing. The look was relaxed yet polished with a generally neutral color palette of whites, tans, and olive with a few ginghams, silk prints, and light shades of teal to keep it interesting. Beautiful leather accessories including mandals, bags, and handsome belts with a hook and chain closure are sure to be big sellers next season. However, it was the soft suedes that really stole the show. Jackets, pants, shirts, and short all made out of the delightful material made it almost impossible not to reach out and touch the clothing as it walked by.

The first 20 looks of the show were all white cotton with a focus placed on the jackets which came in many different shapes. Some with buttons to the collar, detailed lapels and even ruffles giving the look a 19th century vibe while others were deconstructed and modern replacing buttons with straps and a few forgoing sleeves altogether. The second half of the collection presented the exact same 20 pieces made in black with a lot of leather showing just how much the tone can change with a simple modification.

Dior Homme and designer Kris Van Assche’s namesake line are being to blend together about as the designer is clearly sticking to an aesthetic he does best. The look is unstructured, loose fits, granddad collars, and deep v-necks. Some of the monotone, loose outfits looked a bit like a karate uniform especially a black sleeveless number tucked into a large waistband over black trousers. Where the collections excelled was with some flowing jacket/cape hybrids that moved beautiful and gave the look a dramatic flare and some excitement.

Galliano’s Little Tramps hit the runway made up with the Chaplin mustache, white makeup, and exaggerated proportions including baggy drop-crotch pants and tight blazers. Classic jackets and trenches with extra long belts tied around them and dandy 3 piece suits showed Galliano’s fresh interpretation of his 1940’s inspiration. The show finished by showing off legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath’s handy work as half naked models (some more so than others) came out with perfectly painted on muscles gleaming through open suit jackets with intricate embroidery on the sleeves and billowy pants.

To lighten the morose mood of the gothic infused collection he injected a beautiful femininity. Lace shirts were paired with skorts and Hannibal Lector masks were worn with beautiful silk suits. Some looks had a wild touch like leather pants, or leopard sleeves while others were head-to-toe animal. Beautiful tuxedo jackets, a shirt with a giant skull on the front, shorts worn over leggings, and formalwear jump suits are just some examples of the contrasting range of styles found throughout this collection.

The clothing was fit for a high fashion version of the “Warped Tour”. There was a distinctly young, urban, skater vibe to the show with graphic skulls patterns, black and checkerboard motifs resembling the original Vans sneakers, and a some splashes of red. There was an irony to be found in the dressy manpris and clean-cut button down combos adorned with skulls on the back. Even the more simple looks kept Kawakubo’s theme alive with leather blazers and office appropriate suits that still managed to look non-conformist with boxy cuts, super cropped pants and visible tattoos that seem to have become a runway staple this year.

In a city where air-conditioning is a rare commodity, it was hard to imagine wanting to wear all the leather and suede (no matter how beautiful it may be) that took over many runways. Designer Junya Watanabe was prepared to help his clients escape the summer heat via sailboat with his nautically themed Spring Summer 2011 collection. The pants, which came in an array of khakis and blues, were rolled up to the ankle with a bit of a flare and worn with classic white Bucks. Nautical stripe sweaters and tops came in all styles and were paired with casual cotton and linen blazers. Outerwear included colorful parkas and lightweight jackets with toggle closures – perfect to protect against a chilly ocean breeze.

The way he keeps fans interested from season to season is by changing up his look a bit while playing with new textures and prints.

His Spring Summer 2011 menswear collection had a rougher alternative vibe to it – quite different from his usual clean-cut and classic look.

He used a lot of denim – pants, jackets, vests, all with varying degrees of bleach stains splattered on – which is a big change from his usual aesthetic.

Luckily he did not stray too far with the new look pairing the denim with his signature belted cardigans, beautiful tweeds, and timeless jackets and trenches with a bit of leather patchwork here-and-there to create some outstanding pieces for next summer.

Every season Jean Paul Gaultier treats his audience to a fantastically themed show to represent his current source of inspiration.

This years Men’s Spring Summer 2011 show in Paris was no different.  Set in a steamy Moroccan bath (built inside Gaultier’s headquarters) the stage was complete with oiled up men lounging and giving each other massages.

As usual, the look of the collection reflected his theme.

However, this season he did not get as carried away as he sometimes does and the clothing did not feel campy or get lost in his grand vision.

This is not to say that Gaultier has left his fun, wild side behind, on the contrary.

The collection had a distinctly North-African feel to it with harem pants, linen tunics with amazing embroidered designs down the front, and a lot of strategically placed transparent panelling.

He also mixed in a few immaculate suits and cool safari jackets, with wild 3-D prints and skimpy speedos making the collection both sellable and oh so Gaultier.
