Antonio Marras huffed and puffed, and blew the house down with his wolf themed show. This was a fully formed collection that mixed Marras’s romantic tendencies with the show’s animal spirit so that the clothing had a mystical, with just a dash of menacing, edge.
Surprisingly, it was not the wolves that Marras mentioned when talking about the vision he had for his show. “The key element of this collection is a unique woman reminding me of Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who was a Swiss writer, photographer, intellectual and poet,” said the designer.
Perhaps it was in Schwarzenbach’s choice to live a multifaceted life that blended a number of careers that intrigued Marras. That is certainly the way he likes to design his clothing. Because nothing is ever straight-forward or simple chez Marras. It’s all about an endless experimentation with fabric. The mélange of textiles, the controlled embellishments and finding inventive new ways to combine his assorted materials to create stunning pieces that are always more then just a sum of their parts.
Sticking to his preferential tiered A-line silhouettes, rounded outerwear shapes and asymmetrical outlines Marras crafted clothing that was uniquely beautiful. The relatively speaking stark beginning of the show that was dominated by pieces that featured mirrored profiles of a wolf - which Marras eventually reworked in everything from prints and beading to lace and patent leather - grew into a rich assortment of sartorial options that neatly inserted masculine features into its romantic foundation.
In particular, the coats were sensational. One showstopper was a needle punch jacket that was a combination of pieces of an old military jacket with floral brocades and charcoal wool. Alternatively, one cocooning coat in tiers of lace, quilted satin and shaggy furs was also a winner.
It was a collection that left the audience howling for more.
