The minimalists couturier. At forty years of age Bouchra Jarrer is a young French designer who, after working as the studio director and right-hand woman to Nicolas Ghesquiére at Balenciaga before opening her own maison de couture three seasons ago, is winning fans with her signature touches. Minimal lines (assez Céline), the nod to military shapes, carefully assigned stripes and just the tiniest hint of drama via sleek slashes in the back or across the chest are all elements that she continues to propose with elegance. Over seventeen looks Jarrer took us on a journey that began with a very solid, eye-catching royal blue, opened to grey and moved, like sundown, onto black. As light shift dresses (almost Japanese tea dresses with ties to the side of the waist) walked the runway many wondered if this was couture. If it’s made by hand and cut to measure, it is. The play on the biker jacket and chic, slim cut trousers felt of the moment. Haute Couture trendy? It really is a new fashion decade...
