Slowly but surely, Bouchra Jarrar is building a strong foundation for her fashion house. She has just hired a press agency in New York to promote her brand in the United States, beefed up her staff in Paris, and, this season, she has expanded the reach of her ready to wear collection.
“I wanted this collection to be full of energy,” said Jarrar during a presentation of her spring/summer 2015 line. So energetic were some of pieces that they didn’t even stay in the show room long enough to be looked at- as they were being snapped up by visitors to be worn at events that evening.
The intrinsic energy that the designer was talking about was transmitted both in the inclusion of vibrant pink and cobalt blue colors into the collection, and also in a few of her chosen silhouettes. Her successful A-line maxi pleated dresses from couture were back, and a new oversized, color-block shirt-dress option made a welcomed appearance. Another nice new addition, which could stand shoulder to shoulder with her now hallmark trench coat, was a structured, yet roomy, zip up coat.
The athletic flair of a smooth varsity sweater, crafted from viscose cashmere, had a timeless appeal. And the introduction of cotton into Jarrar’s sophisticated aesthetic, via beautifully tailored cargo pants and v-necked tops, showed a smart new avenue of exploration.
As meticulous as Jarrar is, both in the growing structure of her house and the designs on her catwalk, she is still open to new adventures. If any designer could shoulder the weight of a major fashion house as well as a signature label, it is this talented woman.
