Designer Francisco Costa had a stroke of good fortune on Thursday when a snowstorm hit New York City just as he showed a fall/winter collection filled with snuggly knitwear.
So in synch was this show to the sartorial needs predicated by its surrounding environment that it was almost surprising not to see at least one frost bitten audience member trying to run off with one of the multitude of wonderfully warm looking ensembles Costa had created. Who wants to wait six months, these clothes are needed pronto.
But putting the “I need this now” frustration to one side, the workmanship on display in this Calvin Klein show was both impressive and alluring. The collection was actually more intriguing then normal do to the fact that it didn’t feel like a Calvin Klein show. The minimal aesthetic of the house and its preference for muted hues were sidelined for a truly striking exploration of knitwear.
Costa sent out his knits and fabrics in a wide range of different textural surfaces. Using mohair, cashmere, wool and tweed as his foundation textiles. He paneled his fabrics, ribbed his knits, fabricated a furry mohair and cashmere mélange, needle punched his wool and crafted some geek chic pieces that had different knit techniques displayed on top of each other on the torso of sleeveless sweaters. There was so much going on in each and every outfit that an up close and personal inspection will be the only way to appreciate say the mandarin dégradé wool coat with clever and crafty safety pin closures or the Fair Isle sleeveless knit dress. And every outfit came paired with the “it shoes” of New York Fashion Week- calf hair combat boots.
This warm and cozy show was strongest with its daywear pieces. When the weave work was used on the gauze and nylon mesh evening attire it didn’t quite have the polish most women will probably be looking for in event attire. But no matter, there was more then enough in this collection that made you want to just burrow in deep into the outfits and stay cuddled inside them until spring rolls around once again.
