Etro Ready To Wear Fall Winter 2013 Milan

As the fashion world begins to move away from the computer generated prints that have fascinated it for about the past five years, it has been interesting to see how brands who have made their living from this particular style are adapting to the changing fashion climate.  But while some are struggling to find their way, no one should be worried about the Etro brand. It was around before the print explosion and, as the fall/winter 2013 collection proved, the house knows how to adapt in the aftermath.

This season designer Veronica Etro explored the idea of bringing together the heritage and traditions of a woman’s culture with the modern age of digital design. This meant using print inspired by romantic Renaissance paintings, Russian ceramics, and what looked to be vaulting cathedral architecture. Etro then ravaged them by layering into the prints strips of undulating black that broke up the rich designs. It created a designer dissonance that looked daring and felt modern.

This collection was also a rather sexy one for Ms. Etro. Her models, their hair styled to look like a contemporary take on the mullet, walked confidently down the catwalk in dresses that sliced away in angular shapes at the waist, had low cut V-neck fronts or left backs exposed and legs sliding out from slits in wrap front skirts.

When the designer wasn’t showing off her prowess with prints she confirmed she was “au courant” of the current trend towards textural designs. The intricate beadwork on a black and yellow evening gown, a jacket covered in beaded spots and a show stopping zipper sleeved dress with red beaded squares swelling over the bodice were each breathtaking in their own way.

Etro should feel particularly proud of this bang on show. It demonstrated that she is a designer, much like the theme of her show, who has kept her hooks in the house’s heritage and has yanked it into the here and now.
