Givenchy Appoints Matthew M. Williams As Creative Director

 Luxury brand Givenchy has announced the appointment of American designer and founder of luxury streetwear label 1017 Alyx 9SM Matthew M. Williams as the House’s new creative director. Starting from June 16th, Williams will take on all creative responsibilities for women’s and men’s collections, whilst also independently designing for the Alyx brand.

In an official statement, the 34-year-old self-taught designer said he is “honoured” to be taking on the role, succeeding Clare Waight Keller who left the fashion house in April.

Williams described his appointment as his “lifelong dream”, before adding that “at the same time it’s bittersweet because we’re living in unprecedented times in the world. I just hope in some way I can bring hope and with my community and colleagues, create positive change for our industry and for the world.”

“I am convinced that, with his unapologetic approach to design and creativity and in great collaboration with the Maison's exceptional ateliers and teams, Matthew will help GIVENCHY reach its full potential,” added Renaud de Lesquen, Givenchy’s CEO and President.

The designer debuted his Alyx brand in 2015, which has since become iconic for its translation of contemporary culture into high fashion, as well as its ‘rollercoaster’ belt buckle. Williams’s first designs for the House are expected in October 2020.
