Junya Watanabe Menswear Spring Summer 2014 Paris

It’s true that Junya Watanabe is not a mainstream designer. But this season it looks like the torrent of more traditional menswear fare has merged with this designer’s distinctive tributary.

This fashion move towards the Watanabe mindset was most clearly felt in the “inside out” aspect of his spring/summer 2014 collection. It is a directional trend that is gaining more traction with every passing day of the Paris menswear shows.

As experimental designs are in Watanabe’s wheelhouse, he was particularly successful at pulling off this reversed vision of fashion. He took the idea of exposed pockets, fabric panels and floral patchwork linings and melded them into an adorable summer camping theme. One where fly fishing with a multi pocketed vest and tan roll cuffed trousers, hiking with a bright red and blue color block coat and lounging by the campfire in a hibiscus print top and plaid shorts was the order of the day.

As the smiling models wandered the runway in pairs or alone, the covetable backpacks and bags the designer created in collaboration with the German outdoor accessories brand Seil Marschall (who makes all their camping accessories by hand in Ravensburg, Germany) could be fully appreciated.

The endearing collection was a terrific outing for Watanabe. It’s easy to imagine many of the soon to be iconic “inside out” pieces of this show being snapped-up by stylish men next summer.
