It may have been the ongoing economic malaise that inspired Marc Jacobs to reference fashions from the Great Depression in his spring summer 2014 men's collection.  But with a big helping hand from Brooklyn-based graphic designer Bast, he turned those down-and-out frowns upside down.

Large black and grey stripped denim overalls with matching pants and jean jackets were inspired by workwear during the Dust Bowl. Double-breasted pinstriped suits and star dot patterned jacquard pants, polka dot pajamas and oversized sweaters also fed an overall 1930's themed motif.

Bast, who personally worked on a media-inspired mural on the showroom walls, played a huge hand in designing graphics for T-shirts and zigzag patterns for sweaters and accessories.  On the bright side of the showroom Bast’s art imbued Jacob's stylistic flair. Mash-up florals, checks, stripes and mesh extended the collection to a younger demographic.

A sportswear theme also permeated throughout the collection: seersucker boxer shorts with tape detail, a hoodie made out of silk and cashmere, and a wool silk combo bomber jacket infused true luxury into a youthful array of clothing.

Oxfords in zig zag patterns were colored in bright oranges and yellows, while a limited edition high tops all bearing different graffiti-inspired patterns were a sign of current times.

Limited to 100 pairs worldwide, each shoe will be hand painted by Bast himself and numbered to bear its authenticity.

Jacobs offered us an entertaining reprieve from a more sartorial approach seen on the runway, with the same revolutionary spirit Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned the economy around with the New Deal.
