Masha Ma's spring summer 2015 collection, presented Wednesday in the Marais, put an emphasis on the mini skirt looks that have proven so popular this season.

Only a few outfits even reached the knee and there were certainly no trousers.

To kick start the show, the designer sent out a series of creative ensembles. She accessorized looks with medical long white socks, turned into boots, and gold versions of the white germ masks so beloved of the Japanese. Call it an original play on the Japanese influence sweeping through the collections this season.

The masks enhanced the quirkiness of the first ensemble, with its ruffled gold sleeves descending from the frame of another outfit du jour, the bomber jacket. In Ma's hands, the bomber was given a feminine twist with a bustier, a waist band and ruffles built into the front panel.

The jacket was paired with a shabby chic miniskirt in shimmering gold that fit in with the disheveled couture look of the piece.

There were iterations of the design that followed in a patchwork of strong colors, like mustard and olive or lilac and blue used to outline the bustier and define the skirt.

Then the looks mellowed into an elegant and sometimes girly sports couture, which included little white dresses that looked like a play on a tennis dress. And there were yellow shorts worn with one of a number of sweatshirts that looked perfect for a cheerleader warming up.

Although the 70s have been the era of choice for spring/summer, some of the designs with, say, a busy patterned sleeveless top worn with a mustard yellow mini, seemed to point to the 60s, in a style emphasized by heavy eye makeup and the socks that worked like outlandish Sixties boots worn by the first fans of pop.

But when does one trend really begin and end? It was a smart collection, showing imagination and an observance of trends from a young designer who worked with themes in a quirky way.

Adding sportswear designs sometimes looks incongruous in a collection and there was an element of that here.

But once the show was through with the more sporty looks, other inspiring designs were presented that elongated, for example, the bomber jacket into a dress, or cropped the form and paired it with layered slit skirts, or dressed up the jacket in busy prints and bustiers with wide belts to create a glamorous cool aesthetic.
