In occasion of its latest runway show at London Fashion Week on Sunday, MM6 Maison Margiela announced a brand new partnership with outerwear specialist brand The North Face. Incorporated into multiple silhouettes of the MM6 Autumn Winter 2020 collection, the collab managed to mix The North Face signature’s Expedition System with the conceptual prowess of the Maison.
Resonating with the modular and customisable nature of both the MM6 collection and the original Expedition System, the collection was engineered with interlocking components made to adapt and extend the protective, insulating properties of each design. Starting from The North Face’s iconic black shoulder construction executed in a bright palette of cobalt, violet, bottle green, sun yellow and safety orange, the textiles ensured each piece preserved ultimate functionality while embodying a sculptural and resolutely avant-garde silhouette. Keystone garments from the series were re-imagined in circular patterns that mimicked the ‘circle’ concept inherent to MM6. This duality was applied to iconic styles, including the hooded Himalayan Coat, the cape-style Mountain Kaban and the compact Nuptse puffer jacket – all crafted with recycled down insulation.
Multiple accessories also fused elements of MM6 iconography with the classic The North Face functionality. The padded Nuptse scarf was adapted by adding dual pockets and a loop fastening system, while opera-length alpine mittens were split at the thumb for a ‘Tabi’ effect. A circle backpack and clutch were each modelled off the circular base of The North Face Base Camp Duffel, complete with webbing handles and a transparent ID window.
The MM6 | THE NORTH FACE capsule collection will be available from September 2020 in selected multibrand stores, in key flagship stores and online.
