Trend Watch: Runway rebels emerging at NYFW

 

There’s been an increase in attitude among certain collections at NYFW this fall, and that’s to be expected from designers such as Hood by Air and the Vfiles team, but the overall sense of rebellion seems to underscore a larger surfacing mood.

Teen angst poured out of Alexander Wang’s assortment, who finished up at Balenciaga last season, possibly indicating his sense of freedom and uprising from working within such a rigid system outside of his namesake label. He concocted a collection that “deliberately opposes standard definitions of beauty and taste” with graphics emblazoned over delicate sheers, disheveled fur-trimmed coats, and boyish hoodies, together feeling one part Supreme, one part Saint Laurent.

 


Fenty X Puma by Rihanna ready to wear Fall/Winter 2016, New-York

 

For the Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection, the singer admitted that she’s inspired by attitude more than anything, helping to decode the collection from other descriptives such as streetwear or health goth. “This collection is not only a representation of who I am and how I dress, but also pushes the boundaries of what I wanted to create,” says Rihanna. “I wanted to take Puma to a new place with something unpredictable and unexpected. It's Japanese street culture with a haunting twist.”

Over at Hood by Air – the pioneer of progression – things felt different, in an evolved sense. An anti-conformist sensibility was still noticeable but the concept was more “read between the lines.” Shane Oliver’s pieces were deconstructed with meaning, hinting at a body of time-travelling pilgrims whose path you wouldn’t want to cross.
